What CNAs do
People remember how you cared for them.
Imagine helping a resident stand after a difficult morning. You explain what will happen, check that the path is clear, help them move safely, and give them time to feel steady. Later, you notice they seem less comfortable than usual and tell the nurse.
CNA work includes moments like these every day. We teach personal care, safe transfers, vital signs, observation, communication, resident rights, and infection prevention. You practice in the skills lab before using what you have learned with residents under supervision.

Read All FAQsHow long is the CNA course?
5 weeks and 175 total hours. The course includes at least 75 hours of classroom and skills instruction and 100 hours of supervised clinical training.
What will I learn and practice?
You will practice personal care, safe movement and transfers, vital signs, communication, infection prevention, resident rights, and accurate observation and reporting. You learn how to carry out a task while protecting the person’s comfort and dignity.
Do I need healthcare experience?
The course starts with classroom and skills practice before clinical training. If you have cared for a family member, that experience may help you connect with the work, but it does not replace course requirements or the state exam.
Who teaches the CNA course?
Missouri-licensed registered nurses or licensed practical nurses with adult-teaching preparation or experience lead the academy’s CNA instruction. Admissions can tell you about the instructor for the class you choose.
Am I certified when I finish the course?
Not yet. Completing the course prepares you for Missouri’s CNA competency exam (the state exam). You must pass its knowledge and skills tests to pursue certification and placement on the state registry.
